Exploring Sri Lanka's Miniature Rainforest
Nestled along the scenic Galle–Udugama Road, the Kottawa Forest Reserve is a magical pocket of tropical paradise waiting to be explored. Though it covers only about 37 acres, this enchanting rainforest holds all the beauty, mystery, and biodiversity of Sri Lanka’s great wet evergreen jungles.
Just a short drive from Baddegama town, or a quick exit from the Southern Expressway (Colombo–Baddegama interchange), Kottawa welcomes travelers into a lush world where sunlight filters through dense canopies and every breath feels alive with nature’s rhythm. 🌳✨
🌱 A Living Rainforest in Miniature
The forest lies between **50 and 300 meters above sea level**, wrapping both sides of the road in emerald green. Its tall trees stretch skyward, creating a living cathedral of leaves and branches. Beneath this canopy, the air hums with the sound of birds, crickets, and rustling leaves — a pure Sri Lankan rainforest experience.
Hidden pathways wind into the forest, leading to charming surprises:

Kottawa’s biodiversity is breathtaking — over 170 tree species, including 100 endemics. Towering Dipterocarpus trees and tree ferns dominate, their trunks covered in orchids and moss.
Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys swinging through the canopy
Birdwing and Blue Oakleaf Butterflies dancing in sunlight
Gentle, non-venomous forest snakes and bright agamid lizards
Colorful freshwater fish in crystal-clear forest streams
It’s truly a living museum of Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.
🕰️ A Forest with History
During World War II, the British Empire used this area as a security operations headquarters. Later, in 1931, 38 acres were designated as a research forest park, renamed Kottawa Forest Park in 1937, and today, it proudly stands as the Kottawa Kombala Reserve — one of Sri Lanka’s best-preserved lowland rainforests.
